Know when checking an option becomes a credit application
A soft-check starting point does not tell you what happens at the next step. Before continuing, identify the creditor, the inquiry type and the event that could trigger a hard inquiry.
Bottom Dollar Payday is a product of FSST Financial Services, LLC, not a lender. An independent provider processes the application; terms and availability depend on the provider.

Start with your situation
Use the stage you have actually reached—not the label in an advertisement.
A local estimate is not a credit decision. Check whether the next action merely changes the estimate or submits identifying information to a provider. This page’s numeric worksheets do not request a credit report.
Read the disclosure for the named provider. Ask whether this stage uses a soft inquiry, how long the result lasts and what must happen before formal approval. A preliminary amount can change after further review.
Pause at the consent screen. Confirm whether continuing authorises a hard inquiry, another report or additional underwriting. Do not rely on a soft-check message from an earlier page to answer this question.
| Stage | What to confirm before proceeding |
|---|---|
| Estimate or comparison | Whether information stays in the tool or is submitted |
| Preliminary eligibility | Named provider, report source and inquiry type |
| Formal application | Whether a hard inquiry is authorised and triggered here |
| Additional verification | What may be rechecked and why |
| Account opening | Whether final terms differ and what is reported afterward |

Lenders may obtain a report at different points in the process. The CFPB’s guidance does not establish one universal trigger for all providers. [S22] Keep a dated copy of each disclosure rather than reconstructing consent from memory.
A soft inquiry does not affect credit scores; a hard inquiry can. [S07] Neither statement tells you whether a lender will approve the application or offer the displayed terms. “No impact to check” should be tied to the particular check described.
Example: a provider displays a preliminary $1,000 amount after a stated soft inquiry. The next screen asks for permission to perform a hard inquiry for a formal application. The first disclosure has not promised a soft-only loan. Decide about the second permission before submitting it.
| Field | Preliminary result | Final agreement to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | Estimate or conditional figure | Approved principal and net proceeds |
| Price | Indicative rate or range | Disclosed APR and all applicable charges |
| Payment | Estimated schedule | Actual payment amounts and dates |
| Conditions | Initial eligibility | Remaining identity, income and account checks |
| Availability | Displayed result | Expiry, state and product restrictions |
On a narrow screen, scroll inside the table to see every column.
Do not schedule an essential bill from a preliminary amount alone. Compare the completed offer again if the amount, cost or payment changes.
For an unclear consent screen, ask the creditor to identify the next check before proceeding. Save the answer and the disclosure. A website cannot guarantee how another creditor will code an inquiry.
For an inquiry you do not recognise, first identify the business and any application you authorised. If the report contains an error, follow the reporting company’s dispute process and provide supporting records. [S13] Do not dispute an accurate authorised inquiry merely because an application was declined.
Even when a preliminary check is soft, the loan may still add fees and a new payment. Check net cash, due dates, total repayment and a lower-income scenario. Do not trade a clearly unaffordable offer for avoiding an inquiry.
Next action: write down the exact next event, its disclosed inquiry type and the provider receiving the application. Continue only after the permission and financial terms are clear. This page neither submits a credit application nor promises that another provider will use only soft inquiries.
The local worksheets use only the numbers you enter and do not request reports. Following an external provider route is a separate action governed by that provider’s disclosures.
Do not assume a universal grouping rule or point impact. Scoring model, credit product and inquiry details matter; this page does not promise a protected shopping window.
Ask the provider about expiry and conditions. A saved screen is a record of displayed terms, not a commitment to lend.
Continue to the online application. Review the terms of any offer before you accept.
